Clinical psychology

Clinical psychology is a personalized care for individuals seeking self-knowledge, acceptance and guidance, whether it is professional or emotional.
The psychologist is prepared to assist the individual in the discoveries of self-knowledge, by listening and respecting his patients, without personal judgment, and helping to raise possible hypotheses and new ways of acting.
The therapy sessions are weekly with a duration of 50 minutes.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural mechanism of human defense that alerts you to possible dangers and also generates a positive energy, which assists in the organization of events by anticipation. However, the excess of anxiety that causes the body to be on constant alert and accelerates thoughts, among other symptoms, can cause an anxiety disorder to be treated.
In the treatment of anxiety, the psychologist will be the facilitator, helping the individual to recognize what generates his or her accelerated thoughts, as well as what triggers that trigger them, to reverse this process.

Eating disorders

The most well-known eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating. Those eating disorders cause deep psychiatric conditions and profound changes in eating behavior and dysfunctions in the control of weight and body shape. Individuals with these characteristics need treatment with the intervention of a team of health professionals as a psychiatrist, a psychologist, an endocrinologist and a nutritionist.
Cases of obesity or cases in which the individual develops a troubled relationship with his or her diet, but does not present characteristics to verify diagnosis of eating disorder, can be followed initially only by a psychologist.

Anxious Hyperphagia is an Eating Disorder caused by anxiety, which causes the individual to consume hypercaloric foods rich in carbohydrates and fats.
The disorder is an emotional background directly linked to the high level of anxiety, leading this individual to the difficulty of recognizing when he eats to satisfy hunger or to suffocate his anguish and pain.
The psychologist will use techniques to help the individual to find the anxiety generators and reeducate their eating habits with the help of a nutritionist when needed.

Burnout syndrome (stress for overwork)

Burnout syndrome is the worker’s depression. It is characterized by physical and mental exhaustion generating extreme stress that changes blood pressure, generates insomnia, release of cortisol, constant irritability, instability and difficulty in dealing with others. There is cognitive loss, negative thoughts, low attention, concentration and productivity. It is clear that the cause of the syndrome is linked to the working conditions of the individual, who will need the help of therapeutic strategies to decelerate the conditions generating the biochemical imbalance that resulted in the burnout syndrome. Depression

Depression is commonly characterized by an absence of mood, will, and life purpose. There may be episodes of extreme anger, very common in adolescence. There is a loss of interest in things that once aroused attention and a marked lack of motivation for everything.

Many may be the causes and different levels of depression, but the search for therapeutic help is needed. In treatment, performed with a psychologist, and often with the accompaniment of a psychiatrist, the individual may feel sheltered to work his burden of pain and suffering, until he finds his own strength to resume his life.

Panic Crisis and Panic Disorder

A panic crisis is the maximum anxiety an individual can feel in a short time (20-40 minutes). These are sporadic episodes with sudden onset, resulting from emotional stress, experienced for a maximum of one and a half years.

Panic Disorder is the increasing frequency of these panic crises episodes. The psychologist assists the individual in recognizing the onset of stress that has generated emotional exhaustion until it culminates in the panic crisis and helps to control the levels of anxiety that trigger these crisis.

Metanoia (Individual questions about life from the age of 40)

Metanoia is not a syndrome or a disorder, but it can destabilize an individual’s life if not experienced properly. It is a period of life where the individual naturally goes on to thinking of the “done or not done” of his life. He starts to resign life by reflecting more on his choices and values, but often the individual finds himself confused and lost needing someone to see his life from a different perspective to help him to clarify his motives and choices through self-knowledge.

This person needs to be prepared for that and a proper professional is the psychologist. The therapy sessions are weekly with a duration of 50 minutes. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s response to therapy. Generally, in 3 months the individual is able to follow life more safely by himself.

Guidance for parents and teachers

Directed guidance is a session previously scheduled to clarify specific questions from parents and teachers about their children or students.
A prior contact is made with the psychologist to describe the complaint about the individual, the age and the need to be clarified.
A 50-minute session with the parent or teacher is scheduled for guidance on the complaint question.

About Shirley Vitorino

Shirley Lima Vitorino graduated in Psychology from Faculdades Metropolitanas Unidas (FMU), with experience in Clinical Psychology. In the care of children and adolescents, she had worked by Donald Woods Winnicott’s psychoanalysis theory. In the care for adults, she worked by the Gestalt-Therapy Humanist theory.

She also developed a service in School Psychology, observing the impact of low self-esteem on the academic performance of children, as well as on their interpersonal relationships.

Did a refresher course on Updating on Psychological Aspects of Nutritional Pathologies, at the Institute of Teaching Hospital Albert Einsten.

She currently works as a clinical psychologist, also providing assistance for English native speakers or those who have this language as the only form of communication in Brazil. In addition, she also provides brief guidance and clarification for parents and teachers in her office by scheduling in advance.

She gives talks on topics related to Psychology. She had participated in volunteer work at ASA – Adventist Social Assistance, which is linked to the international assistance agency ADRA – Agency for Development and Assistance Resources.

In addition to her background in psychology, Shirley Vitorino also worked in the area of ​​education with a degree in Portuguese and English Literature with a Post-Graduation in Teaching at Tertiary Education Level. After her experience with education in Brazil and abroad in Lincoln, Nebraska, in The United States of America and Hong Kong, China, she felt the need to expand her knowledge through the study of Psychology, an area in which she continues to work and study until today.
